Tullgarn Palace is one of ten Royal Palaces in Sweden. It was built in the sixteenth century for the Count Carl Sture. The first four-story building was torn down in 1720 on the order by Magnus Gabriel De La Gardie and replaced with the palace that stands there today. It was then bought by the government in 1762 for the disposal of the king Gustav III´s youngest brother – Prince Fredrik Adolf, Duke of the landscape Östergötland in which the palace is located.
Duke Fredrik modernized the palace in neo classical style with some of the best interior designers and artists of the times. Louis and Jean Baptiste Masreliez where two of those. Many of the interiors from that period remain today in their original form.
Tullgarn has been a popular summer palace amongst Swedish Royalties. Many of them have left fine examples of interiors from their different epochs and personal styles. You will for example find a small drawing room that was decorated in the 1790s, a breakfast room in southern German Renaissance style from the 1890s and Gustaf V’s cigar room that has remained more or less untouched since he died in 1950.
Your Private Driver will take you to the Tullgarn Palace that is situated 1 hour south of Stockholm. You will see well preserved and impressing historical interiors and you will have time to explore the surrounding gardens.
Next stop is the picturesque city Trosa that is situated nearby. Trosa received its ”township” status from King Karl IX of Sweden in 1610. In 1719, Trosa was burned down by Russian invaders.
The town church was consecrated in 1711 and was spared from the fire by the Russians as they used it as a stable, it is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Trosa. A small river ends in the harbour where you will find a stone pier called The Butter Bucket. The locals says that when you arrive there you have reached “World’s End” and can go no further. pal
