Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné, 1707–1778) is one of the world’s best-known scientists. Linnaeus’ was a multi talented scientist that could call himself physician, botanist, geologist, zoologist and philosopher. He travelled, he observed, recorded, tested, analysed and published a large variety of manuscripts on many different topics. He sought a universal classification of all creation, animal, vegetable and mineral. It is called taxonomy: a classification system for the natural world to for the naming of species and order them according to their characteristics and relationships with one another. He spent more than 50 years in Uppsala and we will walk in his footsteps and see and experience some of the things and sights he saw some 300 years ago. Come and see some of the unique legacy he left behind and learn more about him and his contribution to our lives today!
Tour Description
The Chauffeur will pick you up at your hotel, cruise ship or home in the Stockholm area.
He will take you to Linnaeus’ country estate Hammarby just outside Uppsala where you will have a guided tour in English. Then he will take you to Linnaeus Garden in central Uppsala where spent 35 years of his life. This is where he gathered plants that he and his helpers collected and here hed had a Directors´ lodge at his disposal which became an international centre for scientific research and it was here he wrote some of his famous books. The last stop are at the Botanical Garden that is situated close to Uppsala Castle. We will explore the gardens but Linneanum will unfortunately not be open.

Stop at Linnaeus’ Hammarby
We will start the tour at Linnaeus’ summer residence Hammarby that he bought in 1758. He wanted to escape Uppsala in the summer and make shure that his wife Sara and his 5 children where secure if something happened to him. We will attend a guided tour so we can get access to the gardens and to the historical interiors in the main buildings. There are a souvenir shop and a café for your convenience.

Stop at Linnaeus Garden
Next stop on this tour is the botanical garden of Carl Linnaeus in the center of Uppsala. When he became professor of medicin and botany in 1741 he also became the head of the botanical garden. During Linnaeus’ time in the garden, almost 4 000 different species were grown in the garden. We will also visit the Directors´ lodge which was Linnaeus´ home for 35 years. It became an international centre for scientific research and it was here he wrote his famous books. Today the building houses the Linnaeus Museum that the Swedish Linnaeus Society is running. We will attend a guided tour in english. The garden has a nice souvenir shop.

Stop at Botanical Garden in Uppsala
The last stop on this trip is the Uppsala Botanical Gardens. It has some 8 000 species that are kept for teaching, research and biodiversity conservation, a magnificent Baroque Garden, and a 200 year old Orangery – The Linneanum, built in honour of Linnaeus. We will explore the gardens but Linneanum will unfortunately be closed at the time we arrive.
