Gripsholm Castle was built 1537-1545 on behalf of King Gustav Vasa. It is one of Swedens´ most important historical monuments from the 16th century and from the Vasa dynasty. It served as one of the main residences of the royal house and it contains a lot of traces from the different kings and queens that has spent time there the last 400 years.
Gripsholm is also the home for the Swedish National Portrait Gallery, It was officially founded in 1822 as the first of it´s kind in the world and it contains more than 5 000 portraits of prominent Swedes from the 1500s until to today.

Stop at: Gripsholm Castle
Gripsholm Castle, one of Swedens´ most important historical monuments from the 16th century when Gustav Eriksson (Vasa) got himself elected as the king of Sweden (1523) after he had led Sweden to independence from Denmark with the dissolution of the Kalmar Union.
It is a fascinating castle with a lot of historical interiors from different centuries. Gripsholm is also the home for the Swedish National Portrait Gallery from 1822 that contains more than 5 000 portraits of prominent Swedes from the 1500s until to today. As the english guided tour just are held at 15.00, everyone will get an official guidebook for the castle in English with a suggested route that helps you to get the most out of your visit. Your chauffeur will follow you and answer questions.

We will continue to Mariefred, the small but historical city from 1605 that has hosted Gripsholm Castle for centuries. We will have a walk in the picturesque city area with lots of old buildings, a city square and narrow shopping streets. Then you will have free time to explore the shops by your own.

If we have time left on our way back to Stockholm, we can decide if we would like to make a short stop at Taxinge Castle to have a coffee and a cake from their famous cake buffe.
